Many lives all winter in the cold zone in a heated box where the killing cold makes adequate ventilation impracticable. The inside air is soon badly polluted with the fumes of cookery, may be with tobacco smoke, and the filthy emanations of body and breath.
If man were no tougher than the fish, he would die in the polluted air of his home as the fish dies in the polluted water of its tub. He gets “used to it” because of the marvelous powers of adjustment of his body. But the body does not make man immune of his polluted Environment, and he dies by inches.
An adult poisons nearly a barrel full of air at each exhalation. That foul air he breathes over and over again all winter in his home. The results are colds, coughs, sore throat, pneumonia, etc., etc.
Without the form of man as the instrument through which to work, Divine Life could not express itself in its highest state, and the green globe on which we live would have remained a vast wilderness of forests and jungles. Without Divine Life to construct his body and inimate it, man could not have come into existence, much less do the things which he appears to do and which he thinks he does of himself.
Man is not alive. He has no more to do with the work he thinks he performs, than has the violin with the marvelous melodies drawn from its depths by the bow of the artist.
Man is only an instrument. So is the violin. Back of the violin is the living artist. Without the artist, the violin could not have come into existence.
The body, like the violin, had nothing to do with its formation, organization, and construction. The body is only clay in the hands of the potter. Behind it is the Hidden Artist, which we call Divine Life — that great mystery which none can know, and which ever remains invisible.
The Mother Church, born in darkness, developed in the blood of millions of innocent victims who refused to embrace its false dogma, sustained by instilling the fear of death into the mind of the masses, beholds the brilliant reflection of the Golden Dawn and trembles.
For the sign of the approach of the Golden Dawn heralds the reviving of the lost wisdom of the Ancient Magi; which informs man of the mysteries of Creation that will liberate his mind from the fear of death.
Why do deer and crows live long? Why do some of the lowly turtles live 1500 years? If an animal can live so long, why can’t man live just as long? Surely, we should be able to discover the reason for the turtle’s longevity. By applying these principles to the way of man, then he too should live, to say the least, as long as a useless turtle.
